Built on the site of a former Shell gasoline station on a busy corner in the heart of Uptown New Orleans, the retail building at 6001 Magazine Street transformed the site from decades of domination by the concrete-covered, vehicle-laden fueling spot to the quaint pedestrian commercial space it yearned to be. Utilizing economical shop-panelized walls and trusses, the building was erected rapidly. The trusses achieved 55-foot-long clear spans, allowing the building to be built without any structural steel. The envelope is an artful assembly of cementitious siding, glass picture windows, doors and transoms, and inset ceramic tile that is reflective and respectful of the local historic architecture without attempting to imitate it. The building has 4 retail bays and currently houses a Starbucks and a Pilates studio. To the rear, with an exit on the side street, are 17 parking spaces.
