Gibbs Construction, in a joint venture, served as construction manager for the Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport North Terminal. This new 35-gate airport terminal is just under 1,000,000 square feet spread across three concourses, and is comprised of 12,000 tons of structural steel, 55,000 cubic yards of concrete, and 170,000 square feet of glass curtainwall. Gibbs was the lead local general contractor in the joint venture Construction Manager At Risk (CMAR) partnership of Hunt Gibbs Boh Metro.
The nearly $1 billion new terminal also includes a parking garage, surface parking, airline ticket offices and ticketing hall. It was designed with an ease-of-use customer experience in mind, featuring centralized local restaurants and retail shops, a new consolidated security checkpoint, an open concept design, and a new inbound and outbound in-line baggage system.
In addition to its CMAR joint venture role, Gibbs Construction additionally worked as a subcontractor on the project, handling the concrete package for the terminal building. The $40.8 million scope of work included 361 concrete columns ranging from 33 to 71 feet tall, and 987,372 square feet of concrete slabs. It required a total of 53,121 cubic yards of concrete, equaling approximately 5,312 truckloads. Our in-house technology and trained staff allowed us to precisely and efficiently locate the coordinates of 5,893 anchor bolts. This expansive project also contained 468 pile caps, 3.6 miles of grade beams, and 7,707 tons of concrete reinforcing.
