Doctor Eric George, a renowned hand surgeon and a valued repeat client, partnered with Gibbs through a design-build delivery method to repair and renovate the temporarily closed Omega Hospital, which sustained significant damage during Hurricane Ida. As a private specialty surgery center in Metairie, Louisiana, Omega Hospital teamed with Gibbs during preconstruction through our in-house architectural services and our experienced estimating staff.
The existing five-story concrete structure consists of a three-level parking garage with two surgical floors above, housing four operating rooms, 16 patient suites, a PACU recovery area, and an in-house imaging center with X-ray and CT Scan equipment. Initially, Omega’s scope included repairs to the building envelope and HVAC system. As construction progressed, ERG Enterprises requested that Gibbs design and construct a complete renovation of the fifth floor and a partial renovation of the fourth floor.
The construction of the new centralized clean storage and soiled work rooms, the renovation of patient suite restrooms, and the installation of updated LED lighting and luxury finishes throughout completed the surgical center’s fourth-floor renovation. The fifth-floor overhaul included significant upgrades to the existing HVAC system, modern improvements to the LED lighting, enhancements to the dated staff locker rooms and lounges, as well as a complete millwork refresh and the modernization of high-end finishes. The project benefited from utilizing DIRTT prefabricated wall and millwork assemblies, which drastically shortened the lead time duration for critical building components while seamlessly integrating electrical, plumbing, and medical gas components into the modular prefabricated assemblies.
The success of this experience became the inception of a trusted owner-contractor relationship, which has provided Gibbs with further opportunities to build the subsequent phases for Omega Hospital.
