The West Bank Animal Shelter is a new state-of-the-art, nearly 30,000 square foot facility constructed of two-sided scored concrete masonry units with light-gauge steel trusses.
A full 40% of the building consists of four large dog kennel corridors, containing a total of 86 pairs of kennels. Each kennel boasts both an air-conditioned interior section and an adjacent interior/exterior section facing the courtyard. The exterior walls separating the kennels from the courtyard contain a total of 36 steel rollup doors, allowing the dogs access to the fresh air. Over half of the building has epoxy resinous flooring; it was built to be as washable and corrosion-proof as possible.
The facility was designed with several cheerful and fun touches. For example, the dog adoption room has kennels decorated with brightly colored panels and matching glass blocks in the walls; when the courtyard rollup doors are open, the sunlight illuminates the colored glass.
